Where does energy come from?

A geyser, caused by heat energy in the EarthA geyser, caused by heat energy in the EarthWhen you are feeling very active, someone may tell you that you have a lot of energy. Energy is the ability to do something. It takes many different forms. Fuel contains energy: it is used to make vehicles work. Food also contains energy: it allows you to walk or run. The Sun gives off heat and light. These are both types of energy. They keep us warm and able to see.

Whenever anything moves, it has energy. This includes you moving around, vehicles going from one place to another, birds flying, a river flowing and even the wind blowing. The energy of something moving is called motion energy or kinetic energy.

Plants use the light energy from sunlight during photosynthesis. This is their way of making food by combining carbon dioxide with water. Sunlight makes the chemical reaction happen.
