Roman engineering


The Romans were skilled builders and engineers. After conquering a region, they were quick to construct new buildings, roads and aqueducts (for carrying fresh water). Good roads allowed soldiers, messengers and the delivery of supplies to make progress in all weathers. Most towns had public baths that anyone could visit. These were an impressive feat of engineering, with central heating and water brought in via an aqueduct.

Materials and techniques

Roman architects and engineers built many amazing structures that still stand today. Their invention of concrete, a mixture of quicklime, volcanic ash, stones and water, gave them a building material that was both strong and light. Many Roman buildings and structures have concrete cores, faced with marble, stone or brick.

Rounded arches were much used by the Roman engineers. The architectural strength of this shape allowed the construction of bridges and aqueducts across wide valleys.

Aqueducts

The Roman aqueduct system was built to channel water direct from mountain springs to towns and cities in the empire. If the water pipeline needed to cross a valley, an aqueduct (or water bridge) to support it needed to be constructed. Some aqueducts were more than 40 kilometres (25 miles) long. They had to be carefully built so the water flowed downhill all the way from source to destination.

Building a large, arched bridge for the aqueduct required carefully planning. First, concrete columns with brick or stone outer casings were built. Then wooden frames linking one column to the next were put in place, to support the arch during its construction. Finally the channel was built, with its gradual downhill gradient, along the top of the arched bridge.

Roads

Roads were vital to the effective rule of the Roman Empire. They allowed troops and goods to be moved from place to place. The Romans used their engineering expertise to build long-lasting, straight roads. First, surveyors plotted the course of the road as straight as possible, as this would be the shortest route between places.

Then the workers dug out a trench which they partially filled with rubble. Next, they added layers of stones and gravel, before creating a top layer of flat stone slabs set in cement. This they tamped down so the slabs were firm and even. Finally, they dug ditches along either side of the road to serve as drains. The workers could build up to 300 metres (1000 feet) of road a day.

The Pantheon

The Pantheon in Rome, meaning "temple of every god”, was completed by Emperor Hadrian and dedicated in about AD 125 AD. The building is in two parts: a rectangular entrance porch, called a portico, and a circular rotunda with a concrete dome. The Pantheon's dome is still the world's largest unreinforced concrete dome.

At the top there is a central opening to the sky, called an oculus. The height to the oculus and the diameter of the dome are the same, 43.3 metres (142 ft), so the interior could house a sphere of this same diameter.

The weight of the concrete dome is estimated at 4535 tonnes. Roman engineering genius ensured that this heavy dome has remained in place almost 2000 years after it was built. To lighten the load, the engineers made the concrete thinner at the top of the dome and thicker near its base. They also used lightweight volcanic stone for the upper part, and heavy granite for the lower.
